How a treadmill can build leg muscle
Build leg muscle
Running on a treadmill is an excellent way to build leg muscle. The inclines that they can provide will simulate running up hills for a more intense workout. While building muscle they are also being kind on your joints, thanks to their cushioned decks. A typical treadmill will offer between 15% and 30% more cushioning than running on a road.
Because the belt is moving under your feet and you are not pushing against a static surface, some muscles will not be exercised as effectively as road running. These muscles include the gluteals, hamstrings and lower back muscles. Under using these muscles also means that others will be working harder to compensate so make sure you thoroughly stretch your hip flexors and iliotibial band. Guides on how to do these stretches are available online, or speak to a sports therapist for expert advice.
With the correct stretches you can combine treadmill running with road running for a total body workout in the safest possible manner.
