Bowflex 5 Series Treadmill

The Bowflex 5 Series treadmill is Bowflex’s mid-range running machine, the others being the Bowflex 3 Series and the top of the range model being the 7 series. So what does this Bowflex treadmill have to offer.

Well, the 5 series shares a lot in common with the 3 series. The construction of the frame and belt on both machines are identical. The main difference is the power in the motor. The 5 series has been beefed up to 2.5 HP from the 1.75 HP on the 3 Series. This makes a noticeable difference to the running of the machine, especially with a runner at the top-end of the recommended weight-scale, or when using the machine at full incline or speed. The extra power certainly makes a difference with the size of runner who can use the machine. It is rated to carry a person up to 136kg (300lbs) which is near the top-end for most home running machines.

The running area has been increased on this machine, and is now a comfortable 51 x 152 cm, which is 15cm longer than the lower rated model. It doesn’t sound much but at top speeds you’ll notice the difference. The running deck also features the same Strike Zone cushioning system that is designed to decrease impact with it’s soft landing, but firm take-off technology. Speed-wise, the 5 Series has a slightly faster top-speed as well, note this is only marginal, with the top speed coming in at a smidgen below 11mph (18kph).

The computer console has been beefed up and has twice the number of in-built training programmes as the 3 Series, with a total of 12. We are glad to see that one of these is a heart-rate controlled programme to keep you exercising within the best possible heart-rate zone. Your heart-rate can be measured either by using the in-built hand-grips or an optional chest-strap monitor. There are also two user-defined programmes so you can set up your own running routines. The console also has a number of “quick keys” so you can set the speed and incline of the treadmill with a single touch of a button.

A nice touch on the console is the in-built fan that helps cool you down when running, which has three different speed settings. The warrant is 12 years frame, 10 years motor, 3 years parts and 1 year labour. We’d like to see at least 2 years labour similar to many of the other manufacturers.
